25 Years of India’s Second Pokhran Nuclear Test During the Vajpayee government, 5 nuclear bombs were tested in Pokhran, Rajasthan on May 11 and 13, 1998 under the name ‘Operation Shakti’. APJ Abdul Kalam, the then DRDO chief who later became President, took the helm of the experiment.

The first Pokhran test (code name: Laughter of the Buddha) took place on 18 May 1974 when Indira Gandhi was Prime Minister. In 1998, the nuclear weapon capacity reached 20 kilotons, but in 1998 it reached 200 kilotons.

India is the sixth country to publicly declare its nuclear weapons capability. The countries ahead of us are US, Russia, Britain, France and China. Two weeks later on May 28 and 30, Pakistan conducted 6 nuclear tests.
