French President Emmanuel Macron officially opened the sixth summit between the African Union and the European Union in Brussels on Thursday, setting the objective of “building a future for youth”.
The summit between the two continents is to continue for two days.
“For four years (…) we have been able to identify a Euro-African axis to promote a common vision of our destiny”, declared the French head of state in the preamble to his speech.
He underlines that “Africa is facing challenges” which are shared with Europe “for a good part” and lists, in turn, “the digital transition, the climate transition, the political transition and the demographic transition”. .
The French president also points to the “two crises that have collided” on the African continent, and which are linked to “terrorism and destabilization” as well as “Covid-19”.
He considers these crises “even more difficult to absorb for the African continent since it is a health, economic and social shock”.
Emmanuel Macron also warns that “if there is a failure of the African continent, the first to suffer will be the European continent”.
He wishes to “build an alliance and a new axis” with several axes of maneuver.
“The first is to do together, and not to do for”, he pleaded before mentioning the desire to have “a roadmap” including “concrete projects”.
Seven round tables are on the agenda for this summit and will be organized during the two days of discussion in order to work “on the challenges” raised.
The themes addressed will be those of “financing growth”, “health systems and production of vaccines”, those linked to “agriculture and sustainable development”, that of “education, culture and professional training , migration and mobility”.
The last three round tables are titled “support for the private sector and economic integration”, “peace, security and governance” as well as “climate change and energy, digital and transport transition”.
