The “Choir of 1,000” under Hubert von Goisern will officially ring in – or yodel – the European Capital of Culture year Bad Ischl – Salzkammergut 2024 on Saturday evening in the Bad Ischl spa park. Bad Ischl is the stage all weekend long, the city center will be closed to traffic on Saturday and belongs entirely to the audience. Around 15,000 visitors are expected at the opening events. The Salzkammergut shares the title this year with Tartu in Estonia and Bodø in Norway.
In addition to the banner town of Bad Ischl, 22 other communities in Upper Austria and Styria are part of the Salzkammergut cultural capital region. The annual program developed under the direction of Elisabeth Schweeger includes around 300 projects. The exhibition series “Journey of Pictures” on art theft by the National Socialists represents a focus in terms of content. The event series “critical&controversial” provides a counterpoint to Sisi kitsch and k&k nostalgia. The exhibition “sudhaus – art with salt & water” curated by Gottfried Hattinger deals with the materials of the title; following all, salt has shaped the region for thousands of years. Numerous projects also deal with the topics of climate change, urban sprawl and sustainability.
