In Accra, the African Development Bank Group (AfDB) initiates reflection on climate resilience and energy transition on the black continent. The Annual Meetings of the African Development Bank (AfDB) opened on Tuesday under the chairmanship Nana Akufo-Addo, Head of State of Ghana. His counterparts Filipe Nyusi (Mozambique) and Samia Suluhu (Tanzania) were also in the Ghanaian capital while Azali Assoumani, the President of Comoros, followed the ceremony online. In her speech, Nana Akufo-Addo declared that the Bad “must become a transformation bank” by adopting “a new economic model which will serve our interests”. For the Ghanaian president, it is urgent to “put an end to the structural obstacles to our development”. These Annual Meetings of the pan-African financial institution are placed under the theme “Fostering climate resilience and a just energy transition for Africa”. In this regard, Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, President of the AfDB Group, indicated that “Africa emits only 4% of all global greenhouse gas emissions”. Yet, the Nigerian noted, climate change is hurting African economies. “Africa suffers losses of 7 to 15 billion dollars a year due to climate change. They should reach 40 billion dollars per year by 2030”, informed Mr. Adesina. This is why the African Development Bank intends to double, by 2025, financing in the climate field to reach 25 billion dollars. “The share of our climate finance dedicated to adaptation is 67%. It is the highest of all the multilateral development banks,” welcomed the head of the AfDB. The Annual Meetings of the AfDB are an opportunity for the financial institution to take stock of its actions on the continent. The 2022 edition will be held face-to-face and online. Côte d’Ivoire is represented by its vice-president, Tiémoko Meyliet Koné and Rwanda by its Prime Minister, Édouard Ngirente.
