OpenAI Shake-Up: Negotiations, Pressure, and Microsoft’s Role

OpenAI, a red-brand company in the field of artificial intelligence, suddenly announced on Friday (11/17) that it had fired CEO Altman, and there have been roller-coaster changes in the past few days. According to media reports, OpenAI’s board of directors, interim CEO, Atman and others are currently negotiating to discuss whether to reinstate Atman. On the other hand, Microsoft, which has “hosted” Altman and other OpenAI employees, is preparing offices in San Francisco for this group of AI talents.

“Bloomberg News” quoted sources today as saying that Sam Altman, some members of OpenAI’s board of directors, and interim CEO Emmett Shear are negotiating on Altman’s reinstatement. The sources declined to be named because the negotiations are private and may not reach a conclusion.

According to reports, participants in the negotiations also include some OpenAI investors, who all hope that Atman will be reinstated.

One source said that if Atman returns to OpenAI, he will continue to serve as the company’s CEO. Another possibility is that Altman will also serve as interim chairman of the board, while Bret Taylor, the former co-chief executive of cloud company Salesforce, will serve as the new chairman of the board.

Multiple other sources said the negotiations were the biggest development since Atman was fired without warning last Friday.

Investors including Thrive Capital, Khosla Ventures and Tiger Global Management have pressured the board to reinstate Atman.

Anna Makanju, OpenAI’s vice president of public relations, sent an internal memo to company employees on Monday, saying that the company is having “intensive discussions” with the board of directors, Altman and Hill, hoping to reunite the company’s employees. More than 700 employees have signed a letter threatening to resign en masse.

According to the report, OpenAI hopes to resolve the confusion among leadership before the Thanksgiving holiday so that employees can enjoy the holiday with peace of mind.

According to CNBC, Microsoft, OpenAI’s largest financier and has also announced new jobs for Altman and OpenAI president Brockman, has provided a new home for this group of new employees at the LinkedIn office in downtown San Francisco. The LinkedIn office is only regarding 3 kilometers away from OpenAI.
