Shortly before Sam Altman was fired as CEO of OpenAI, several of the company’s researchers sent a letter to the board of directors warning of a major breakthrough in the development of artificial intelligence – a discovery they believed could threaten humanity. reported Archyde.com with reference to two sources.

The letter became one of the factors in a long list of complaints by the board of directors against the head of the company, Sam Altman. The document was about the Q* project (“Q with an asterisk”) – OpenAI representatives do not give official comments about it, but Mira Murati, who briefly served as the company’s CEO in Altman’s absence, wrote a message addressed to employees in which acknowledged the existence of this project and warned about media interest in it.

The Q* project, some OpenAI employees believe, could be a breakthrough in the development of strong artificial intelligence (AGI), capable of performing tasks as well as a human. Equipped with powerful computing resources, the new model has learned to solve mathematical problems – so far at the level of an elementary school student, but this achievement makes researchers optimistic about Q*’s future successes.

Mathematics, according to scientists, is the cutting edge in the development of generative AI. Now he successfully writes texts and translates into different languages, statistically predicting each subsequent word, but his answers to the same question can vary greatly. Achieving success in a field of mathematics, where there can only be one correct answer, requires the AI to have significant reasoning abilities along the lines of human intelligence. These abilities can be applied to advanced AI research. Unlike a calculator, which performs a limited number of operations, AGI can generalize, learn, and understand.

In their letter to the board of directors, OpenAI researchers noted the power of AI and the potential threat to humanity, although they did not specify which aspects of security they might affect. Information technology experts have long debated highly intelligent machines that, for example, might conclude that it is in their best interest to destroy humanity. The authors of the letter noted the work of the unit, formed by combining the Code Gen and Math Gen teams, – scientists in this unit were studying ways to optimize existing AI models to improve the quality of reasoning systems and direct their potential to scientific work.

Altman turned the ChatGPT platform into one of the most popular software products and attracted financial and computing resources from Microsoft to work on creating AGI. Last week, during his speech at the APEC summit, he told world leaders that a major breakthrough was just around the corner. “Four times in the history of OpenAI, the last of which was no more than two weeks ago, I have had the opportunity to be in a room where we seem to be pushing back the veil of ignorance and pushing the frontier of discovery forward, and to do this has been the professional honor of a lifetime.”, Altman said. The next day the board of directors fired him.
