Open the deadline for future applicants

WASHINGTON (EFE).— NASA opened the deadline to choose its next generation of astronauts, who once selected must complete two years of training.

Applicants have until April 2 to apply for a position whose salary starts at $152,000 annually, will be based in Houston and, according to NASA, will require frequent travel.

The deadline opened the same day the agency welcomed its new cohort of astronauts, in a ceremony at the Johnson Space Center in Houston.

The 10 graduates were selected in 2021 from more than 12,000 applicants and completed two years of training that allow them to be eligible to travel to the International Space Station, to future commercial space stations and on Artemis program missions destined for the Moon and as preparation to go to Mars.

Within the framework of NASA’s partnership with the United Arab Emirates, two astronauts from that country, Nora Al-Matrooshi and Mohammad Al-Mulla, from the Mohammad Bin Rashid Space Center, trained alongside them at this time.

Those who aspire to succeed them, according to the newly opened call, must have US citizenship and a higher academic degree in Engineering, Biology, Physics or Mathematics, in addition to having three years of work experience.

Candidates will undergo a physical and drug test and a psychiatric evaluation, and it is emphasized that long-duration missions in space are very demanding both physically and mentally, because it requires being in confined spaces, facing potentially dangerous situations and enduring long training sessions underwater.

NASA detailed all the requirements on the usajobs.gov website.

“Astronauts are pioneers who will help us embark on this new era of exploration, and we need more adventurers willing to join the group to explore the cosmos, including future missions to the Moon, Mars, and beyond,” said the administrator of the agency, Bill Nelson.
