Government ignores 1948 Genocide Convention and neutrality
Vienna (OTS) – Open letter to representatives of the Republic of Austria
We, citizens, people living in Austria, condemn Austria’s triple “no” to the ceasefire in Gaza within the framework of the UN General Assembly and the EU and the associated breach of the constitution of perpetual neutrality. We urge you to, without further hesitation, publicly support in any way possible the call for an immediate ceasefire and South Africa’s action before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) once morest Israel “for genocide” in Gaza on the basis of the 1948 Genocide Convention .
The Genocide Convention was the first treaty protecting human rights, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on December 9, 1948. With this, the international community, especially Austria and Germany, committed themselves to “never once more” following the atrocities of the Second World War. For Gaza, “Never once more” is now.
We therefore urge you to:
Call for an immediate and permanent ceasefire and an end to the occupation of the Gaza Strip. Publicly support South Africa’s appeal to the International Court of Justice. Impose sanctions on Israel for its gross and repeated violations of international law, including an arms embargo. Call for an immediate end the illegal occupation of the Palestinian territories and strive for a just and lasting peace that respects the fundamental rights of all Palestinians and Israelis. Demand an end to the unconstitutional restrictions on freedom of expression and the right to demonstrate in Austria, which are directed once morest solidarity with the Palestinian people .Within the EU, take a decisive stand for a termination of the EU-Israel Association Agreement from 2000, which obliges Israel in Article 2 to respect human rights. Stop all military and police cooperation with Israel, because this contradicts neutrality , as required by the constitution.
