A Opala company founded by former designers from Apple it’s yes Beats, launched today its second webcam, more than two years following the launch of the first model. A Tadpoleas it is called, costs much less than the previous version (US$175contra US$300 old) and is quite compact.

The new webcam was announced as the smallest ever made, just one-eighth the size of conventional webcams, measuring 1.2 inches square and weighing just 45 grams. To give you an idea, it has the mass of just two AA batteries, according to a comparison released by the company.

Opal also promised “the best image quality on the market”, comparing the device with semi-professional cameras. It has an IMX582 sensor, from Sonywith 48 megapixels and aperture f /1.8, with a six-element glass lens and the ability to capture at resolution 4K.

The device also offers a directional microphone called a VisiMic which “only captures the audio that the camera can see”, made in partnership with Soundskrit. In other words, only what is in the webcam’s field of view is captured in the audio, which is combined with noise reduction technology that uses artificial intelligence.

Tadpole can be attached to the computer/monitor using a clip and connects to the machine (Macs or Windows PCs) with a fixed USB-C 2.0 cable, made of nylon. On one side of the connector, there is a capacitive sensor; by tapping it, you can mute/unmute the microphone — a very practical feature called Tap to Muteand which is being patented by the company.

The company’s idea was to create a quality and practical product, in that it is enough to connect the device to the computer and use the camera, without the need to download any applications or other complications.

Tadpole costs US$175 and it is already being sold on the Opal website in white or black versions. A protective cover is also sold separately, for US$25.
