Onset of winter: Lufthansa cancels flights in Munich and Frankfurt

At its hubs in Frankfurt and Munich, which are also important for flights to and from Austria, only the most necessary flights will be able to operate according to the airport’s specifications, a Lufthansa spokesman said on Tuesday.

The AUA itself wanted to fly to Munich and Frankfurt as scheduled on Wednesday – as of Tuesday at 5 p.m. However, adjustments to the weather situation in Germany cannot be ruled out, a spokesman said upon request.

Heavy snow and freezing rain expected

However, Lufthansa said that short-haul routes as well as long-haul routes would be canceled. The German Weather Service has announced heavy snowfall and freezing rain in the middle and south of the country for Wednesday.

Lufthansa asked customers to find out regarding the status of their respective flights before traveling to the airport. “If your flight is canceled and you do not have another confirmation for the same day, please do not come to the airport. There are no rebooking options there,” it said on the Lufthansa website. Customers should use the online services and hotlines for this.

Restrictions probably also on Thursday

The range of flights will by no means cover demand, said the spokesman. Within Germany, customers might try to switch to the train. On Wednesday the situation will be reassessed for Thursday. The airports have also announced weather-related restrictions on aircraft handling for this day.
