Only the PS5 can run Final Fantasy 16 (Square Enix says so)

Final Fantasy XVI is it too greedy for most hardware? According to the words of the Square Enix studio, only the PlayStation 5 is able to run the game perfectly. For some time now, the situation of the new installment of the RPG has been confusing players. When the title was announced, the trailer revealed the development of a PC version in parallel with the PS5 version.

There was currently no question of releasing the game on Xbox, but the PC release is obviously no longer relevant either. Last January, Naoki Yoshida pretended not to know of the existence of a port. “Buy a PS5” he exclaimed, laughing. However, the second trailer for the game did indeed confirm an exclusivity of only six months. But now Square Enix continues its attempt to make us forget the PC version: it’s all about power.

Development facilitated by the PlayStation 5

Since when are gaming computers less powerful than a PS5? In reality, it is above all a question of optimization. A PC port requires colossal work in order to adapt the title to an infinite number of configurations. Develop Final Fantasy XVI on a single platform, on the other hand, makes full use of the next-gen components, namely the ultra-fast SSD and the graphics processors in the case of the PS5.

For this opus of the RPG, the developers needed the power and stability of the Sony console to allow the colossal fights that we have already seen in a few extracts. “As you fight Ifrit and Garuda in this grand battle, the PS5 loads the next scene in the background” explains Yoshida in an interview with IGN.

Fight Director Ryoto Suzuki even goes so far as to claim that “the development of the title would not be finished” if not for the power and simplicity of the PS5. Multiplatform versions are therefore no longer relevant for this simple reason. A very light justification when you consider the power of the Series X and certain PCs.

Hopefully, more years of behind-the-scenes development will see this title land on other platforms. For the moment, only PS5 players will be able to enjoy the new episode of the cult RPG on June 22.
