Football Association

Budapest has a chance of hosting the Champions League final in 2026 or 2027.
The Hungarian Football Association (MLSZ) is working with a budget of 57 billion forints (145 million euros) this year. MLSZ President Sándor Csányi referred to the corporate tax relief (TAO), which has led to the construction of 40 new football stadiums and the creation of 1,600 football fields since 2011. The newest stadium for second division club Spartacus Nyíregyháza is nearing completion.
National team soaring
The 71-year-old businessman praised the development of the national team under coach Marco Rossi, which moved up ten places in the FIFA rankings to 26th place and remained unbeaten in the European Championship qualification. For the European Championships in Germany, he would be satisfied with a third place in the group and an exit in the round of 16, which would be less severe than the 4-0 defeat once morest Belgium in 2016.
Modern infrastructure is available
But Csányi also criticized the youth work and the lack of presence of talented Hungarian players in the national league. The number of spectators in the stadiums has now reached 4,000 per game, but this is still very modest. In any case, the modern infrastructure is in place, so that Hungary was able to host several European Championship games and UEFA club competition finals in the Puskás Arena. Hungary has also been helping regional associations with venues since the corona pandemic – due to the war, Ukraine, Belarus and Israel are currently using this support. What’s really still missing is a Champions League final in Budapest and Hungary’s participation in a World Cup, something that hasn’t happened since 1986.
