Salzburg had to start against Innsbruck without a substitute keeper, but didn’t let anything go wrong.
This has never happened before: Ice hockey champions Red Bull Salzburg started the league game against Innsbruck without a replacement keeper. David Kickert was ill two hours before the start of the game, when Germany’s U20 team goalie Simon Wolf, as the third goalkeeper, was already on his way to Merano with the farm team. He was rushed back and arrived in the second period.
But that was the only excitement from Salzburg’s perspective. Because as long as Atte Tolvanen closes in the goal and Peter Schneider scores in front, there is little that can be done against a team as big as Innsbruck. That’s how it was this time: Tolvanen saved a counterattack from Adam Rockwood (5th), Schneider deflected in front of the opponent’s goal and the score was 1-0 (12th). It was a successful debut as temporary head coach for assistant coach Ben Cooper. “It was fun, but it wasn’t that big of a difference except for the preparation of the game. We followed through with our plan and gave them few chances.” Cooper will also replace coach Oliver David, who is also ill, on Friday in Bolzano. He was canceled just like Kickert, Nissner and Wukovits. Nissner’s absence will probably last longer; the center, who was so strong this year, was diagnosed with glandular fever, not a good diagnosis for a competitive athlete.
