Only one person showed up to buy the RTX 4060 Ti in Japan

Nvidia’s mid-range cards are always a hit: just a quick look at the Steam Hardware Data that we noticed the presence of several models from past generations leading the list of boards most used by gamers, such as the GTX 1060, RTX 3060, RTX 2060 and also the RTX 3060 Ti. Together they make up over 20% of all graphics cards currently used to play games on Steam (April 2023 data).

With that in mind, vendors in Japan’s popular Akihabara sales district kept their stores open late into the night to cover the launch of the new RTX 4060 Ti. But the history of past releases was not repeated – unlike the debut of the RTX 4090, where customers queued and stocks were quickly sold out (both in physical and virtual stores), only one customer was seen buying an RTX 4060 Ti.

the news site Hermitage Akihabara covered the entire launch event and tweeted a photo of the only customer who went to the district to buy the graphics card.

Why the lack of interest?

In previous releases, the cryptocurrency market was still active – especially during the 3000 generation launch in 2020 and 2021. At that time, we faced a huge shortage of graphics cards, which were quickly bought from stores by miners or by scalpers.

Today, in the “Crypto Winter” season and with the Ethereum cryptocurrency no longer mineable with graphics cards, GPU launches are much quieter.

There is also the reason that the RTX 4060 Ti itself does not offer a huge leap in performance when compared to the mid-range cards that we have had on the market for years. The most attractive is the inclusion of DLSS 3.0 technology, which delivers a great performance gain through the generation of frames by artificial intelligence, but gamers apparently do not care regarding this – at least not for the price of $419 who ask for this plate (R$3,199 in Brazil).
