Mental health encompasses physical, mental and social aspects, but mental health care is neglected and marginalized around the world. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) in its document World Mental Health Report 2022 (Chapter 3 – page 37)in all countries, mental health conditions are widespread, affecting 1 in 8 people, and undertreated, with more recent estimates that 71% of people do not receive any type of treatment. According to studies, Brazil leads the world with the highest prevalence of anxiety disorders and is in fifth place in the incidence of depression.

Medical literature on expatriate mental health is scarce. Studies show that expatriates have a higher risk of mental health and substance use problems, as well as issues consistent with domestic workers, including depression, sleeping difficulties, anxiety, and poor ability to concentrate (Truman et al., 2011). Another study showed that expatriates tend to experience a high prevalence of affective and adjustment disorders related to occupational anxiety, home country anxiety, acculturation concerns, and poor physical health (Foyle et al., 1998).

According to the “Brazilians Abroad” reportreleased in August 2023 by the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, highlights that around 4.5 million Brazilian citizens currently reside in other countries, such as the United States, Portugal, Paraguay, the United Kingdom and Japan, which are home to the largest communities.

Dr. Carla Ribeiro de Queiroz Iizuka, specialist in psychology and neuropsychology, highlights: “online therapy is highly effective, being as efficient as face-to-face therapy, with the advantage of being carried out in a safe environment, flexible schedules, reduced transportation costs and carried out in the patient’s language, factors that can facilitate openness and expression of feelings”.

Also according to Dr Iizuka, “mental health influences our lives in many ways, as it is an inherent and vital part of our general well-being. It allows us to function and thrive as individuals, as well as helping us deal with stress and adapt to change. Quality mental health is essential for building healthy relationships, as well as allowing us to learn well and work productively.”

Dr. Iizuka highlights that by recognizing their difficulties and making the decision to face these challenges with appropriate professional help, Brazilian expatriates can make the most of their experiences abroad, while taking care of their mental health and well-being. The search for qualified professional help must be accompanied by some precautions, such as checking whether the professional is duly registered with the Federal Council of Psychology (CFP) and checking references in relation to indications and evaluations of other patients.
