OnePlus Open challenges Galaxy Z Fold 5 with premium, top-of-the-line footprint | Hands-on video

Launched globally on Thursday, the new OnePlus Open is a foldable smartphone that arrived on the market with the mission of surpassing direct competitors such as the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and other Chinese smartphones, such as the Honor Magic V2.

To accomplish this difficult task, OnePlus’ first foldable was announced with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, 16 GB of RAM, a powerful set of cameras and also a good battery with 67W fast charging.

But is it worth paying the price the manufacturer asks for it? The TudoCelular group had access to a unit and will tell you everything regarding the Open in the next few minutes.

Design and accessories

The OnePlus Open is a nice foldable smartphone and its weight is around 240 grams, while when closed the thickness can reach 12 millimeters when you consider the camera module.

In short, it is a thick smartphone, but this is already a standard in the foldable cell phone industry. As a design feature, we also have a large camera module that occupies almost the entire upper half of the rear.

On the outside, we have a screen with few edges and a “worthy” size for good everyday use.

Using this display gives the impression of using a “common smartphone”. In other words, without that narrower approach that Samsung and other companies offer.

And as we are talking regarding a OnePlus smartphone, here at Open we also have a slider to activate silent or vibration mode.

Holding the OnePlus Open won’t be a problem, as it has flat sides that provide a good grip, while the hinge is smooth. It’s not as hard as we’ve seen on some competitive cell phones, and it’s not too soft either.

The construction is made of metal, with the black variant having a synthetic leather back and the green one having a glass back.

In the audio field, we have powerful and full-bodied sound at the level of a tablet. There are four speakers in total.

And what comes in the new OnePlus Open package? We have the smartphone, USB cable, manuals, key to remove the SIM chip, fast charger, a USB adapter and even a case in the color of the smartphone. In other words, a very complete set.

Screen and hardware

The OnePlus Open has an internal and external AMOLED LTPO screen with 2K resolution and support for a refresh rate of up to 120 Hz.

The only difference is that the external display is 6.31 inches and the internal one is 7.82 inches. In both cases, we also have a maximum brightness of 2,800 nits, something that makes a difference in outdoor environments.

The chipset is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and it works with 16 GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 512 GB of UFS 4.0 internal storage.

As expected, this set will run everything, absolutely everything, from the Play Store, including the most recent heavy games. You can also expand the RAM with another 12 GB, making the Open have 28 GB of RAM.

In terms of connections, the OnePlus Open has a slot for two SIM chips, 5G connection, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.3, NFC for contactless payments and a fingerprint reader on the side.

The OnePlus Open battery is 4,805 mAh and supports 67 Watt fast wired charging. In initial tests it was possible to see that this battery can hold up well and you will be able to reach the end of the day with around 15%.

Of course, if you use it more moderately, such as browsing the internet and social networks, replying to messages and the like.

Software

When it comes to software, the OnePlus Open comes out of the box running Android 13 underneath OxygenOS, which here is much more similar to the Find N3’s ColorOS, but without the excess of pre-installed applications.

This interface is well developed and has a more desktop-oriented approach.

An example of this is multitasking, as you can open three applications at the same time on the internal screen and navigate between them just by dragging to the sides. This works very well here not only horizontally, but also vertically.

Another positive point is that we also have a kind of taskbar similar to Windows, where you can keep some applications pinned to make them easier to open. If you don’t like this feature, the manufacturer also allows you to hide the bar by touching the bottom corner.

By moving any app to the middle, you can open it in windowed mode. Of course, there are still some small problems that need to be resolved when it comes to this taskbar, but this should definitely arrive in a future update.

Finally, OnePlus promises four years of Android updates and five years of security updates. In other words, something at the Samsung level and which is very positive.

Cmeras

The OnePlus Open has cameras certified by Hasselblad and the main sensor is 48 megapixels with optical stabilization, there are also 64 megapixels for telephoto with 3x or 6x optical zoom without loss of quality, optical and electronic stabilization and digital zoom of up to 120 times.

Completing the rear set is the 48 megapixel ultrawide lens. That said, let’s look at the initial tests that showed that the OnePlus Open can capture photos with the same quality as an iPhone 15 Pro Max or Galaxy S23 Ultra.

The main camera is capable of recording every detail in the field of view and the colors follow a realistic pattern. In other words, no exaggeration in warm tones, for example.

Furthermore, in night environments this sensor also performs well and there is no burst or significant problems in points of light. Perhaps what might get in the way here is the exaggeration of the HDR effect in color definition, making the sky completely white, for example. But in this case, just deactivate it.

The telephoto camera really delivers 6 times zoom without loss of quality. I say it even surpasses what we have on the new iPhone.

Of course, zooming in digital mode starts to lose quality when you go beyond 10 times and the result, depending on the lighting, can be very problematic.

The ultrawide sensor manages to do its job well and captures all the details masterfully, but it is clear that in night photos the quality tends to decline.

For selfies, the OnePlus Open has two front cameras. The external one is 32 megapixels and the internal one is 20 megapixels. In both cases, you will get great photos and the internal sensor guarantees the quality needed for a video call at work, for example.

In video recording, the OnePlus Open’s optical stabilization works very well and you can record videos in 4K at 60 fps on the rear or in 4K at 30 fps on the front.

First impressions

Launched globally, the OnePlus Open is a strong competitor to the Galaxy Z Fold 5 in countries where it can be found.

Its price starts at US$1,700, something around R$8,600 in direct conversion and without considering Brazilian taxes. Of course, the price is a bit steep, but here we have a set that delivers everything that is currently most powerful on the smartphone market.

The hinge system is well calibrated, the cameras are good and OnePlus is concerned with bringing a user experience close to a desktop, something very attractive.

However, the fact that the Open is a little thicker may make many people consider getting another device. OnePlus might well have looked at competitor Honor Magic V2 to launch a foldable that is just as thin.

Still, the Open has everything it needs to give the competition a hard time when its price is more competitive in future promotions. It’s a shame that the brand doesn’t sell its devices in Brazil. Even more so since importing is now not a viable option.

OnePlus Open is not yet available in Brazilian stores. To be notified when it arrives.
