A young man injured in the explosion in a block of flats in Tychy, which occurred on Monday morning, was taken to the Upper Silesian Medical Center in Katowice in a very serious condition; Ultimately, he will be treated at the Burn Treatment Center in Piekary Śląskie, hospital representatives said.

A strong explosion, most likely of gas, took place on Easter Monday around 9.30 on the ground floor of a seven-story building at ul. Darwin in Tychy. Several people were injured; seven of them, including two children, with more serious injuries were transported by ambulance and air ambulance to hospitals.

As told to PAP by the spokeswoman of the Upper Silesian Medical Center. prof. Leszek Giec of the Medical University of Silesia in Katowice Jolanta Wołkowicz, a young man who was transported there by an air ambulance helicopter following the explosion in Tychy, is in a very serious condition. After receiving supplies in the emergency department of this facility, he will ultimately be treated at the Burn Treatment Center in Piekary Śląskie.

To the same hospital in Katowice – in Katowice-Ochojec – a young woman was transported by ambulance: with a broken limb, she is to be taken to the local orthopedic ward.

Two children were also transported by ambulance to Katowice – the Upper Silesian Children’s Health Center in the Ligota district: an eight-year-old boy and a four-year-old girl. According to the spokesman of this facility, Wojciech Gumułka, their general condition is good – following examination and appropriate supplies, decisions will be made whether they will remain in the hospital.

The remaining injured following the morning explosion were transported by rescuers to the Provincial Specialist Hospital in Tychy (Megrez hospital).

Rescuers from the Specialist Search and Rescue Group from Jastrzębie-Zdrój worked at the site of the explosion around noon on Monday, searching the rubble with dogs. After checking that there is no one in the area of ​​the incident, cleaning will begin

The morning explosion was strongly heard and felt in the city and surrounding areas. According to Tychy local government officials, in the building itself it caused, among others, destruction of windows up to the fourth floor; the outer wall on the ground floor where it occurred was also destroyed. The Silesian police reported that structural elements and furnishings of the apartments were scattered over several dozen meters.
