Winters have been mild in Bucharest in recent years, with only a few frosty days and little snow. Even this winter, which, according to the calendar, starts in a few days, is not expected to be a harsh one for now, even if the first snowfall – even a light one – is predicted by meteorologists in this last autumn weekend.

But there were terrible winters. 69 years ago, in 1954, Romania faced one of the strongest blizzard episodes. Then, the Capital and almost the entire territory of the country were covered by a huge amount of snow.

In a weather bulletin of the time, meteorologists announced temperatures between minus 18 degrees and minus 24 degrees in Moldova and minus 12 degrees and minus 18 degrees in the other regions. In Bucharest, it was minus 17 degrees at night. The snow did not stop, and the blizzard blew the snow.

On one of the days, when the wind died down a bit and the snow subsided, the Council of Ministers (the then Government) called for a general mobilization to remove the snow from Bucharest and the other cities buried in slush, as well as the railways. Everyone meant “workers, engineers, technicians, officials from ministries and institutions, communists and deputies of popular councils, housewives, peasants, pupils, students”.
