This is the great story of the day. A die-hard early Nintendo fan has received a wonderful gift from strangers, a year following he sadly discovered the terrible state of a priceless piece of his collection.
Nintendo fan before Nintendo
For those who don’t know, Nintendo wasn’t always the giant of the video game industry as we know it today. The Japanese firm has existed since long before the advent of video games, since it was founded in 1889. Originally, Nintendo was a small artisanal company in Kyoto, specializing in the manufacture of Hanafuda, traditional playing cards.
From that time, there is not much left today, but some collectors are still determined to bring together the remains of this past era today. This is the case of Erik Voskuil, creator of the Before Mario blog and author of the eponymous book, who devoted thirty years of his life to constituting the largest collection dedicated to Big N.
Last year, the collector came across two priceless pieces. After many years of research, Erik Voskuil has managed to recover two decks of “Kyoto Memories” cards produced by Nintendo in the 1950s. The Holy Grail for Erik Voskuil, who quickly became disillusioned. Unfortunately for him, following opening the two decks, he realized that the cards had stuck together. Over time, the ink from the cards eventually ran and transformed the pile into a real brick.
They sat pressed together for so long, in the heat and humidity, that the ink from the cards stuck them together. (…) – Erik Voskuil on they are blog.
The nice gesture
The story was destined to end here. These cards being true rarities, it was almost impossible for Erik Voskuil to find them once more. But it was without counting on the generosity of two complete strangers who contacted the collector by falling on his blog. After discovering her story, two people living in the United States each sent her a deck of cards found completely by chance.
The first package comes from a man who started a Facebook group dedicated to playing cards, who collected the cards following an estate sale. The second was given to him by a Portland woman, while the package was discovered in an abandoned house in her neighborhood. While researching the origin of these cards on the web, they both came across Erik Voskuil’s blog.
Both packages are in perfect condition. A real miracle for Erik Voskuil, which allowed him to complete his already well-stocked collection. If Nintendo’s early days interest you, we can only recommend that you visit collector’s website which is a veritable encyclopedia dedicated to the early days of the firm.
