“One minute in front of the mirror” may reveal the possibility of cancer

In this regard, the Oracle Head and Neck Cancer Centre in the United Kingdom (OHNCUK) advised conducting an easy 60-second self-examination to assess the risk of cancer at home.

The examination involves using a large, well-lit mirror, as the center explained: “Early signs of head and neck cancer can be felt in and around the neck, throat and jaw. Check the inside of your lips and look at your gums through the mirror, looking for any lumps, bumps or red or white spots. Then look at the back of your mouth, sticking out your tongue and moving it from side to side. Don’t forget to look under your tongue, too.”

To assess the health of the neck, the area below and around the jaw can be observed and touched.

“This area can feel a bit lumpy at times, especially if you’ve had a cold or other illness recently,” OHNCUK said.

“By getting to know your body and paying attention to any changes, such as lumps or sores, or persistent symptoms, such as a sore throat or difficulty swallowing, you can identify potential signs of cancer early,” said Michelle Vickers, chief outreach officer at the center. “Early detection greatly improves treatment outcomes and can save lives.”

“Regular check-ups with your dentist are also helpful, as cancer screening should be done as part of your oral health review,” she added.

If you notice any of the following symptoms, which are new and last for more than 3 weeks, talk to your GP:

– Persistent mouth ulcers or spots in the mouth or on the lips.

– Persistent sore throat.

Difficulty swallowing.

– Hoarseness or change in voice.

– Persistent cough.

– A lump or swelling in the neck, jaw area, nose, or throat (with or without pain).

– Ear pain.
