In 2021, 14% of people aged 15 or over living at home in France, i.e. 7.7 million people, are disabled, whether due to a sensory, physical or severe cognitive limitation, or due to a strong more general restriction in the activities of daily living. As age increases, these limitations become more frequent: 25% of people aged 60 or over are affected.
8% of people aged 15 or over have a severe physical limitation, 5% a severe sensory limitation and 4% a severe cognitive limitation. Among those aged 75 or over, 5% combine all three types of limitation, compared to less than 0.5% of people aged 15 to 74.
A technical aid or a housing arrangement is used by 8% of people aged 15 or over, while 10% receive help from a loved one or a professional because of a health problem, disability or advanced age to help them in daily life. People with a cognitive limitation receive help from someone on a daily basis more often than those with a physical or sensory limitation.
