According to a study, awareness of the digital radio standard DAB+ rose to 54 percent. DAB+ listeners name better reception and freedom from interference (23 percent) as advantages.
It’s been around five years since the digital radio standard DAB+ was available in Vienna and one year later nationwide. Since then, awareness and use has increased steadily, as a study presented by RTR’s media department on Tuesday shows. 18 percent of the population or 960,000 people use DAB+ several times a month, with 30 percent of households having a DAB+-enabled receiver. The digital radio service is known to 54 percent of those surveyed.
Awareness of DAB+ has increased steadily from 2020 (43 percent), when such a survey was carried out for the first time, to this year (54 percent). 24 percent of Austrians have heard radio via DAB+ at least once. In 2022 it was 22 percent, in 2021 17 percent. It is most likely to be used in the car (57 percent), followed by at home (45 percent). Most people also have a DAB+ device in their car (18 percent). 9 percent can use DAB+ via a portable radio device, 8 percent via a stationary device such as a hi-fi system. In total, this is 30 percent of those surveyed. This value increased gradually over the years (2020: 18 percent, 2021: 20 percent, 2022: 25 percent).
When asked regarding the advantages, DAB+ listeners spontaneously cited better reception or freedom from interference (23 percent), better quality in general (21 percent) or the large selection of programs (12 percent). “Against the background of 70 years of FM radio and only five years of digital radio DAB+ in Austria, these are very respectable successes for the young, digital radio service. The EU obligation that came into force in 2021 to equip new cars with DAB+-capable car radios also contributed to this “said Wolfgang Struber, Managing Director of RTR Medien.
The “DAB+ Digital Radio Austria 2023 Study” conducted by the Ipsos Institute is representative of the 15 to 70 year old population. 2,900 people were surveyed online or by telephone from the end of January to the beginning of March 2023.
