An explosion of ammunition from the Second World War left one dead and two injured in Normandy, France. While clearing out the house of a man who died at the age of 100, the three men threw a bag of ammunition onto a fire on Saturday, the France Bleu broadcaster reported. As the mayor of the town of La Meauffe, Pascal Langlois, told the station, there were 15 to 20 kilograms of explosives in the bag.

These were apparently “highly explosive German products”. The explosion might be heard for miles in surrounding villages. The detonation destroyed the windows of the residential building outside the town and an agricultural building and covered the roofs. One of the two injured people was taken to a clinic by helicopter.

As the prefecture announced, a country road was closed for a large-scale rescue operation. Explosive ordnance experts detonated five additional kilos of ammunition that were discovered on site in a pit dug for this purpose. “The gentleman who lived there was lucky that his house wasn’t blown away while he was handling these materials during his life,” said the mayor.
