In a previous article, I presented to you in broad terms Home Assistant. We saw its interface, on which equipment to install it, and the different possibilities offered by this application. This article was the result of a software migration for my association. Today I am home automation, so the need is slightly different and I will take the time to share with you my different configuration/installation.
What to install HA on?
Just like my previous installation, I started with a mini PC! In the first article, you will find the different types of possible installations with of course the feasibility on our dear Synology NAS. The best way to find a small, inexpensive PC is still the good corner. I’m a fan of the Lenovo Tiny type. After a few minutes of research, I bought a Lenovo M700 for €100. The latter is equipped with an Intel i5-6500T CPU @ 2.50GHz with 16 GB of RAM and a 512 GB SSD. Its dimensions are 180 x 180 x 34 mm. As an opportunity (and as a precaution), I replaced the SSD with a 256GB M2. It will be on 24 hours a day and being essential, I prefer to avoid a breakdown. For the memory part I did several test cycles with MemTest.
You will ask me why not install HA on a Nas? In fact I have a Synology 918+ it is possible to install Virtual Machine Manager it can therefore host VMs. The problem is that there is no backup system with the free version. It is possible to program snapshops but it is not a backup. This remains on the Nas and in the event of a crash we lose everything. If you want to have real backups you have to upgrade to the paid version. We will talk regarding backup in a future article.
Installation de Proxmox
In order to detail the reasons why I use Proxmox I invite you to read the previous article. Start with download the ISO from the official websitethen you will need to create a USB key bootable with Rufus For example. All you have to do is install. Be careful, for my part, once the boot started this one block at one step before starting the installation. I solved the problem by simply plugging the USB key into a rear port on the PC. Installation is very easy, follow the steps one by one, there is not much to configure. Remember to indicate your email address and configure the fixed IP for your Proxmox server.
By default, Proxmox is configured to operate in the enterprise version with subscription. Of course, Proxmox is free for specific use.
Optional : In order to be on the right repositories for updates and not to have a message at each connection to switch to this version, we are going to run a script to resolve all of this. Go to the site then click on Proxmox VE Tools and on Proxmox VE Post Install.
Copy the bash code.
Go to your server with its IP address and port, then click Proxmox and on Shell. Paste the bash and enter line.
Answer Yes to all questions. Our server is now ready.
Installation de Home Assistant
This is where everything will happen in one click. We will return to the same site to run a script. Once on click on Home Assistant Then Home Assistant OS VM. Same procedure as the previous script, we retrieve the link and put it in the Proxmox Shell. This script will automatically create the VM with 2 vCPUs with 4 GB RAM and 32 GB storage, which is enough for HA. He continues with the installation of HA, he will look for the latest version on the official Home Assistant repository, this is not a “modified” version for this script.
You will have the choice to do the default or advanced installation. You will be able to modify the configuration of the VM, select local storage (you will not have your NAS, this is a configuration that we will see in another article) the download starts and the installation is then carried out.
Once the installation is complete, click on your VM then on Consoleyou will find the IP and port to connect to your Home Assistant.
Now all you have to do is create your connected home.
Once the configuration is complete, I recommend that you start by setting the IP of your HA. Go to Setting Then Network. Deploy IPv4 and enter your IP.
