One admitted it was his gun, but then the police examined it for DNA

In connection with an investigation in September 2023, North Jutland Police had received a tip regarding suspicious circumstances in an apartment in Aalborg.

As soon as the police arrived at the apartment, where four young men were present, they tried to escape out of a window or hide under a bed, but without success.

When the police subsequently searched the apartment, they found a loaded pistol in a jacket pocket, which was wrapped in a plastic bag with a knot on it.

One of the four young men admitted that it was his gun, but when the police subsequently examined the gun, they found DNA from one of the other young men.

Denied knowledge of gun

The young man, whose DNA was found on the loaded gun, sat in the dock at the Court in Aalborg on Wednesday followingnoon accused of illegal possession of weapons.

Here, the 25-year-old man explained that it was his jacket that the gun was in, but he denied having brought the gun to the apartment.

He further explained that some of the other men had fetched food and either knowingly or unknowingly placed the gun in his jacket pocket.

The 25-year-old man did not have a good explanation for how his DNA had ended up on the gun in the plastic bag.

Sentenced to two years in prison

However, the court did not agree with the man’s explanation of the sequence of events and believed that it was unreliable.

Among other things, the court emphasized the man’s presence in the apartment, the DNA on the gun and the fact that the gun was wrapped in plastic.

Emphasis was also placed on the fact that one of the men charged for the shooting at the Regatta in August 2023 in Aalborg was also present in the apartment, and that he is charged with being in possession of the same gun.

All this put together meant that the 25-year-old was sentenced to two years in prison for illegal possession of a weapon under particularly aggravating circumstances because the court believed there was a risk that it might be used.

In addition, he was given an additional four months in prison for being previously convicted and in possession of pepper spray and an insulation knife.

The 25-year-old man received the sentence and remains in custody. This is what North Jutland Police’s prosecutor in the case, Mathias Petersen, says.
