New tool helps doctors choose the best cancer treatment for their patients

Although medicine does not yet have the capacity to cure all diseases, it has made many rapid and revolutionary advances. Personalized medicine, for example, makes use of advances in genetics, bioinformatics and environmental influences. One of its main targets is the area of cancer, in which several genetic alterations have already been identified as causing the disease, allowing for more precise treatment. The same cancer treatment no longer works for everyone. Cancer is much more complex than previously imagined. There are marked differences in the same tumor types between patients. They are like “digitals”, specific to each individual.

Personalized medicine

With personalized, or precision, medicine, individuals are treated as unique and do not suit the treatment, on the contrary, the treatment adjusts to the patient, bringing a range of benefits. For example, in a prevention approach, it allows us to investigate susceptibility to certain pathologies, even before they manifest themselves clinically, enabling monitoring and even prevention. Regarding treatments, precision medicine indicates a choice of treatment that has a greater chance of results, since it is personalized. Furthermore, precision medicine promotes the development of personalized alternative treatments for individuals who would not respond to conventional treatments.

Cell cultivation

Among the new therapies that are revolutionizing medicine is the Onco-PDO Test, developed by Invitrocue Brasil. This is a three-dimensional cell culture, which better reflects in vitro the conditions observed in vivo in the tumor of origin. The Onco-PDO Test takes into account that each patient is unique, and this helps the doctor to make the best choice for that specific patient. Some tumors are resistant to certain medications and knowing in advance the responses of the patient’s tumor cells to different treatments in the laboratory contributes to oncologists’ decision-making.

The benefit is that the Onco-PDO Test allows you to specifically check the effect of different medications on the patient’s tumor and work directly with the living cells that form the cancer in each case.

The test for cancer treatment

The test is especially indicated for patients who have just been diagnosed and for those in whom tumor growth has returned following standard therapy, that is, for those in whom the first line of treatment did not show a satisfactory response. As it is a 100% individualized analysis, the Onco-PDO Test will help in choosing a new, more assertive chemotherapy regimen.
Available in Brazil for breast, lung, colorectal, pancreatic, gastric, prostate and ovarian cancer, the Onco-PDO Test allows the doctor to choose 8 of 60 drugs for testing and the result demonstrates how the cells responded in the laboratory. The report, generated within 21 days, provides information on how the patient-derived organoids reacted to the different treatments tested. The Onco-PDO Test is available for collection throughout Brazil. For more information, consult Invitrocue Brasil.
