A few days ago, actor Samuel L. Jackson told a story on Jimmy Fallon’s Late Night Show that nobody might really believe. The now 73-year-old is said to have won a match once morest Tiger Woods many years ago as part of the Alfred Dunhill Championship in St. Andrews. But how did the unlikely pairing come regarding and, more importantly, how was the actor able to beat the greatest golfer of all time?
Samuel L. Jackson: “It was a complete coincidence!”
Though Jackson originally wanted to pitch Jimmy Fallon for his new series on AppleTV, the late-night host came up with the incredible story right from the start. Is it all just rumours, or is there some truth to the story?
The actor said, “It was complete coincidence,” Jackson said. “The first time I played at St Andrews I was paired with Woods at the Alfred Dunhill Championship. I was handicap 16 at the time and that’s why I got my 16 shot lead and ended up playing a 78 because he [Woods] said ‘follow me’ and I just stayed as close to him as I might. I played a 78 and he was even par, meaning I beat him by eight strokes.”
Even if the unusual way of counting suits the actor somewhat in his narration, one has to recognize that if the story is correct, a round of 78 on St. Andrews is definitely an outstanding achievement. And as luck would have it, the British Open Championship will be held on that St. Andrews Course this year. It would be the ideal opportunity to pit Jackson and Woods once morest each other in a Capital One match so the actor can convince any doubters once and for all.
