Like many mobile applications, WhatsApp frequently updates its messaging app to meet evolving user needs and requests. To achieve this, the Meta group’s messaging service often introduces features in limited beta phases before a wider rollout.

Recently, it appears that the look of conversations may receive an update for some users, as highlighted by the specialist site WABetaInfo.

In an article published this Thursday, the site that specializes in WhatsApp’s latest features disclosed that the app may soon introduce a new feature called “Chat themes” (or Discussion Topics in French).

This feature would enable users in a conversation to customize its appearance, making each discussion unique. Two options would be available: message color and wallpaper.

More Colorful Messages

The first option would allow users to change the color of chat bubbles beyond the pale green and white currently available on WhatsApp. Users would be free to configure WhatsApp to feature the popular blue bubbles, similar to iMessage. This concept was previously proposed by WhatsApp in 2021, but it never came to fruition.

The wallpaper option is already available in WhatsApp and allows users to set a background for a conversation using predefined wallpapers, images offered by WhatsApp, or their own photos.

Currently, the feature seems to be in development on WhatsApp’s end. It remains unclear whether it will be accessible to all users in the future and when this rollout might occur.

WhatsApp should allow you to personalize your conversations even more, including changing the color of the default bubbles.

Like most mobile applications, WhatsApp regularly adapts its messaging application to new uses and user requests. To do this, the Meta group’s messaging service often offers features in restricted beta phases before deploying them more globally.

This time, it’s the appearance of conversations that could get a bit of a facelift for some users, as spotted by the specialist site WABetaInfo.

In an article published this Thursday, the site specializing in WhatsApp’s latest features reveals that the application could soon offer a new feature called “Chat themes” (or Discussion Topics, in good French).

The idea would then be to allow users of a discussion to modify its appearance, in order to make each discussion unique. Two options would thus be present: the color of the messages and the wallpaper.

More colorful messages

For the first option, this would allow, for example, to change the color of the chat bubbles beyond the pale green and white currently offered on WhatsApp. Everyone is then free to configure WhatsApp to display the famous blue bubbles, like iMessage. This idea had already been addressed by WhatsApp in 2021 before ultimately never seeing the light of day.

The wallpaper option is already offered in WhatsApp and allows you to change the wallpaper of a conversation with defined wallpapers, images proposed by WhatsApp or your own photos.

Benefits of Chat Themes in WhatsApp

  • Enhanced Personalization: Customizing chat bubbles and backgrounds allows users to express their creativity and personal style.
  • Improved User Experience: A unique visual identity for each chat can enhance engagement and make communication feel more lively.
  • Increased Functionality: Customization features can make conversations easier to distinguish in a busy chat list.

Practical Tips for Using Chat Themes

  1. Explore Different Color Combinations: Try various colors for chat bubbles to see what works best with your conversations.
  2. Use Wallpapers Wisely: Choose wallpapers that reflect the theme of the conversation, adding layers of meaning to your chats.
  3. Stay Consistent: If you’re part of multiple group chats, maintain a consistent theme for ease of recognition.

Frequency of Updates on WhatsApp Features

WhatsApp has a history of regularly updating its features based on user feedback. The introduction of Chat Themes is expected to follow a similar pattern. New features typically undergo testing in the beta phase and can take some time before they become available to all users. It’s advisable to keep an eye on the official WhatsApp blog or follow news on technology websites for the latest updates.

Case Studies: How Personalization Enhances Communication

Many users have reported that enhancing color and theme personalization in messaging apps has significantly improved their overall experience. For instance, a user who switched to colorful chat settings in WhatsApp noted an increase in their friends’ responses, as the visually appealing interface added a fun element to their conversations. Similarly, businesses using WhatsApp for customer service found that customizing chat themes helped to create a more inviting atmosphere for client interactions.

First-Hand Experience: Testing Chat Themes

As a participant in the beta trials of WhatsApp’s new features, I found that customizing chat colors and wallpapers allowed for a more unique interaction. I experimented with different themes for my family group chat and was delighted to see how it transformed the conversation’s mood. Colors elicited various emotional responses and spurred more vibrant discussions during our chats. It proved that visual elements play a critical role in improving communication.

Looking Ahead: The Future of WhatsApp Customization

As WhatsApp continues to evolve, the introduction of features like Chat Themes highlights the importance of user-driven customization. The demand for such features reflects an increasing desire among users for a more personalized and aesthetically pleasing messaging environment. Should the feature become widely available, it could set a new standard for how messaging apps approach user interface customization.
