Saturday February 24, it’s been 53 days since Sherine, a 25-year-old content creator, has been live 24 hours a day on the Twitch platform. At the end of December, the French-speaking Spaniard with 61,000 followers embarked on a “Subathon”, the equivalent of a live video marathon on Twitch, which can last from a few hours to several weeks.

Since the end of December, Sherine has lived day and night in front of her camera, almost without interruption. And she didn’t expect it to last this long. Because this is the principle of “Subathon”: the duration is initially defined by the owner of the channel, but it can extend as users subscribe, each subscription adding three minutes to the timer and bringing in money. money to the videographer. Sherine had left to stay live for five hours, she has been spending her days for almost two months, and its nightsin front of his camera.

“It’s a little strange to sleep in front of the camera,” concedes Sherine. To be as comfortable as possible, the videographer puts herself under certain conditions before falling asleep: “I leave a few lights dim so that people can distinguish me, I also pay attention to the pajamas I wear”. The streamer also adds a blurry filter to her camera in order to preserve an ounce of privacy, puts on some music and mutes her microphone, “I wouldn’t want to start snoring live!” she jokes. But for Sherine who “need a lot of silence to sleep”, music, computer noise, and lights left on wake her up easily. However, the young woman assures that she is not “not very shy in front of the camera”even before going to sleep.

“I’m only sleeping”

Videos of streamers sleeping in front of their cameras are collected in the category “I’m only sleeping” in the very anglicized language of Twitch, “I’m only sleeping” in French. The category has developed in recent years in concert with “Subathons”, these long-term live shows. According to statistics from the Twitchtracker sitein February 2024, nearly 7,000 viewers viewed channels in the “I’m only sleeping” category.

Sherine’s sleepy nights attract on average between 50 and 70 spectators, compared to 300 simultaneously during the day. “It’s particular, Avance Sherine, because at night when I sleep there is no interactivity between them and me.” But its spectators exchange with each other on the chat, “people who have insomnia for example”, says the content creator. For her, “it’s good to share the night stream”because she feels “closer to [sa] community”.

“Normally, when you create content on Twitch, it’s worked, this time it’s much more intimate.”

Usually, the videographer is only live between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m., during her “Subathon”, she is online 24 hours a day, which allows her to discover the habits of her viewers in a new light. “The night owls and the early risers, the spectators who say nothing or the chatterboxes, describes Sherine. “We call each other by our first names, and finally by our nicknames.” she enthuses. “It really brought me closer to my community”underlines the young woman.

And Sherine not only shares her sleep in front of her spectators, but her whole life live. “I take them with me when I go to the gymshe describes,When I’m shopping, when I’m with my mother and even when I’m cleaning.”. “You just have to be prepared to carry around with a tripod and your phone everywhere you go.”, indicates the young woman. After three years of presence on Twitch, she manages to free herself “a very decent salary, although variable, the equivalent of a minimum wage”. Sherine still has at least 100 hours, or more than four days, to honor with her subscribers, according to her counter. The young woman is preparing to spend more nights in front of her camera, because her “Subathon” is not yet finished.
