At the beginning of 1822, the Turkish-Egyptian fleet left the Hellespont, heading for Patras, in order to supply the besieged by the Greek rebel Turks.

At the beginning of 1822, the Turkish-Egyptian fleet led by Vice-Admiral Kara Pepe Ali and Egyptian Vice-Admiral Ismail Gibraltar left the Hellespont with orders to sail to Patras, in order to supply the Turks besieged by the Greek revolutionaries. A fleet of 63 Greek ships from Psara, Hydra and Spetses was found in its wake, led by Nikolis Apostolis, Andreas Miaoulis and Gikas Tsoupas.

On February 15, the Turkish fleet docked in the port of Patras, due to bad weather. Andreas Miaoulis, who had assumed the command of the Greek armada, considered it a suitable opportunity to attack.

On the morning of February 20, the Turkish-Egyptians were surprised to see that they were being cannonaded by the small Greek ships, and in fact under a terrible storm. After a naval battle of five hours, one Turkish frigate was completely destroyed and several other ships suffered significant damage. Many Turks were killed or seriously injured.

The Turkish fleet, following leaving Patras, took refuge in Zakynthos, which was under English administration. When the Greeks sailed there to repeat their attack, they were blocked by the English, who claimed the neutrality of the island. The Greek fleet returned on February 24 and anchored in Messolonghi, ready for a new confrontation.

The Naval Battle of Patras, in which the star of Andreas Miaoulis shone, was an event of great importance for the Greeks’ struggle once morest the sea, despite the small Turkish losses. It was the first time that Greek ships confronted the Sultan’s fleet in formation, without using firepower.
