The Great San Francisco Earthquake.
A devastating earthquake, measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale, hits San Francisco. The dead are estimated at 3,000, while the homeless at 300,000.
1932
Greece declares default. A last ditch effort by the government of Eleftherios Venizelos to save the drachma.
1951
France, Germany, Italy and the three BENELUX countries (Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg) sign in Paris the founding act of the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC), which will be the forerunner of the EEC and the European Union.
1988
Company “Horse of Panagia”. Naval battle between the US and Iranian navies in the Persian Gulf, during the Iran-Iraq War (1980-1988). It lasts one day and is the largest naval battle since the end of World War II. The Iranians lose 2 warships and 6 patrol boats, while the Americans lose a helicopter.
1996
Eighteen Greek tourists are killed and sixteen others injured in a terrorist attack by Islamic fanatics outside the Europa Hotel in Cairo. The organization “Gama al-Islamiyya”, which targets Israeli tourists, claims responsibility.
