Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov did state on April 4, 2024, on NATO’s 75th anniversary, that Russia is in “direct confrontation” with the alliance.
His efforts NATO to expand towards the East is an obsession for him Vladimir Putin who declared war on Ukraine in March 2022. The intention of the Russian president was not to approach the borders of of Russia the Alliance, however this is not the case after the recent accession of Finland and Sweden as member countries.
“In fact, relations today have slipped to the level of direct confrontation,” commented Dmitry Peskov.
NATO is “already involved in the conflict involving Ukraine and continues to move toward our borders and expand its military infrastructure toward our borders,” the Kremlin spokesman said.
Putin has repeatedly stressed that Russia was cheated by the West in the wake of the Cold War as the Soviet-era Warsaw Pact fell apart but NATO expanded eastward to welcome former members of the pact and the three Baltic states, which were part of the Soviet Union .
The West rejects this version, saying that NATO is a defense alliance and that joining it is a democratic choice of countries that have shaken off decades of communist rule.
According to the newsit, NATO says it is helping Ukraine fight for its survival in the wake of Russian aggression and has equipped Kiev with advanced weapons, providing it with training and intelligence.
Russia counters that this makes NATO a de facto party to the conflict.
In February, Putin said that a direct confrontation between Russia and NATO would mean the planet is one step away from World War III.
