The co-president of Groen and the leader of the PS group reacted strongly to the disclosure of new racist remarks attributed to the president of the Flemish socialists.

Voices are multiplying on the left to distance themselves from Conner Rousseauthe president of Vooruit implicated for racist remarks he allegedly made at Saint-Nicolas on the night of 1is on September 2 and which targeted the Roma community. The decision of the East Flanders public prosecutor’s office, announced on Wednesday, to initiate a mediation procedure as well as the revelation of new racist remarks in the same context have in fact put additional pressure on Rousseau.

Mediation is a voluntary procedure that can be offered for offenses punishable by imprisonment of up to two years. The person concerned must recognize their civil liability and mediation can result in compensation, for example.

Nadia Naji, co-president of Groen, “personally no longer sees any points in common” with Conner Rousseau. “I hope that there are still enough allies within Vooruit” in the fight once morest racism and discrimination, she declared Thursday on VRT, in the Villa Politica show.

The precise comments attributed to Rousseau were revealed Thursday by the newspaper Het Nieuwsblad. “I notice that last time, we tried to put these statements into perspective, but in reality they are even worse. They are racist, misogynistic and violent,” reacted Nadia Naji.

She also sees “a political line” in Conner Rousseau, referring in particular to remarks made regarding the municipality of Molenbeek.

Laaouej outraged

For his part, the MP and leader of the PS group in the Chamber Ahmed Laaouej doesn’t lose his temper either. “This is unworthy of someone who calls himself progressive. Such explicit racism is the antithesis of socialism.”

“With his statements, Rousseau shocked hundreds of thousands of people.”

“I am the son of a Moroccan father who came to Belgium to work in the coal mines, which meant he died too early. With his statements, Rousseau shocked hundreds of thousands of people“, he adds.

The PS deputy admits that crime and incivility are a reality, “but crime does not depend on origin”, he wants to clarify.

In his eyes, Rousseau must apologize once once more and show that he takes the fight once morest racism seriously. “He must prove that he shares the commitment of Vooruit, which is a party that effectively fights once morest racism. A visit to the Dossin barracks is certainly useful, but we are also waiting for concrete actions.”
