An the photos of the last few weeks, only four of them had shown themselves. There are five of Wanda. And the five-piece fit this band from Vienna and their anthems, right from the unforgettable beginning, back in winter 2014, when suddenly everyone everywhere seemed to be singing “Amore”: Wanda, you thought, if you weren’t singing along, it wasn’t a band , but a gang, and this dynamic of unbeatability that Wanda convinced herself, like any gang, was contagious, you wanted to be there with all your doubts, with this last new thing of a dying breed: rock ‘n’ roll men in pop.
“One Gang”: That’s how Wanda sing it on their new album, which was released this Friday. One of the five, keyboarder Christian Hummer, died “following a long, serious illness,” as the band announced on Tuesday. What Hummer played, which had been missing in the last photos, rarely pushed forward or only briefly, like in “Standenallowed Wine Bottles” from the debut album, once Hummer sang a song himself, “Maybe” (2019). Whatever he contributed was always reflected in the calculated impact of this concept volume. Wanda initially canceled all appointments. Christian Hummer was 32 years old.
