On the coast, the rivers burst their banks again

On Monday evening, Kretinga district mayor Antanas Kalnius went to Salantis. It is reported that the water of the Salanta River is rising rapidly in this city. However, following going to the place, it became clear that the situation is under control.
On Tuesday followingnoon, it was observed how the Minija river burst its banks in the Kartena valley.

In the followingnoon, the water level reached 454 cm. The natural level is fixed from 520 cm. As the elder of Kartena, Arūnė Putvinienė, stated, the level of 532 cm was reached during the flood in November.

“We live near Minija and we know how it is. We are ready. The situation this time will depend on the weather. However, we see the promise of cold. So maybe the water won’t get too bad,” said the old lady.

Residents assess the situation calmly.

As A.Putvinienė, who has been in charge of the Kartena township for five years, said, the residents of Kartena explain that the floods of recent years are not so terrible, although they are quite frequent.

“People say it used to be much worse. One can only imagine how,” said the elder.

As the Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Service informs, on December 19 in the country’s rivers, the water level continues to rise, 1-139 cm per day. Dangerous water levels are observed in Leyte near Kūlynai and Šyša near Šilut. The water level will continue to rise in the near future.
