On the anniversary of its burning.. a stand in front of the Moroccan Parliament in solidarity with Al-Aqsa Mosque

Rabat – Hundreds of Moroccans participated in a stand in front of the parliament building in the capital Rabat yesterday, Wednesday, in solidarity with Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, and to demand an end to the ongoing Israeli war on the Gaza Strip.

This came within the activities of the “Blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque Week,” which was launched by the “National Working Group for Palestine” (non-governmental), on Tuesday, on the eve of the 55th anniversary of the burning of Al-Aqsa Mosque on August 21, 1969.

According to the Anadolu Agency correspondent, the participants in the vigil chanted slogans calling for the protection of Al-Aqsa and an end to the “continuous Israeli occupation attacks on it.”

They also condemned “the continued Western support for Israel in its war on the Gaza Strip,” and called for “an Arab Islamic movement to stop the ongoing Israeli war on the Strip.”

The demonstrators raised pictures of Jerusalem and the head of the political bureau of the Palestinian factions movement, Ismail Haniyeh, who was assassinated in Tehran in late July, and they also burned the Israeli flag.

In his speech during the vigil, Aziz Hanawi, a member of the “Working Group for Palestine,” called for “an Arab-Islamic move to support the Palestinians and protect Al-Aqsa,” and demanded that “Arab countries stop normalization with Israel.”

The Al-Aqsa Mosque was set on fire on August 21, 1969, by an Australian named Michael Dennis Rohn. The fire at the time consumed the entire contents of the eastern wing of the Al-Qibli Mosque on the southern side of the mosque, including its historic pulpit known as the Saladin Pulpit.

The Al-Aqsa Week activities bear the slogan: “Resistance and flood against occupation and aggression, until normalization is overthrown and Palestine and the homelands are liberated.”

The group did not provide details about other events this week, but called for “mobilization to activate special programs for Al-Aqsa Week, at all field, cultural, sports and artistic levels.”

In recent months, the storming of Al-Aqsa Mosque by settlers and Israeli officials has escalated, most notably the extremist Minister of National Security Itamar Ben-Gvir, causing a wave of widespread resentment.

This coincides with the continuation of the war waged by Israel with American support since October 7 on the Gaza Strip, which has left about 133 thousand Palestinians dead and wounded, most of them children and women, and more than 10 thousand missing, amidst massive destruction and deadly famine.

Israel continues this war, ignoring the UN Security Council resolution to stop it immediately, and the International Court of Justice’s orders to take measures to prevent acts of genocide and to improve the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
