Since a common vision on the new conditions regarding the change of time twice a year has not yet been reached at the level of the European Union, the previously approved procedure is currently still in force – summer time in Latvia is valid from the last Sunday of March to the last Sunday of October. Therefore, summer time will be valid until October 29 this year.
The transition to summer time and back in Latvia is determined by Cabinet of Ministers Regulation No. 1010 of October 26, 2010 “On the transition to summer time”. The regulations mention that the transition to summer time in Latvia takes place in the following order: on the last Sunday of March at 03:00, the clocks are turned forward by one hour and accordingly on the last Sunday of October at 04:00 – back one hour.
On the other hand, within the framework of the European Union, the transition to summer time is determined by Directive 2000/84/EC of the European Parliament and the Council of January 19, 2001 on the rules regarding summer time. The directive determines the beginning and end of summer time uniformly for all the member states of the European Union.
Daylight saving time was first introduced in Latvia in 1981. Starting in 1997, summer time is in effect from the last Sunday of March to the last Sunday of October. Additional information regarding the transition to summer time and back is available on the website of the Ministry of Economy.
