On July 27, parties must register their candidates – La Discusión 2024-07-05 00:42:51

Next Sunday, October 27thThe 2024 general elections will be held on Saturday 26th (and perhaps also on Saturday 26th, if the bill currently being processed in Congress is approved).

These are regional and municipal elections, in which the positions of regional governors, regional councillors, mayors and councillors will be elected.

According to Law 21,524, this is an election with compulsory voting. The Electoral Registry closed on June 8, the day on which the deadline to request a change of electoral address ended.

For these October elections, the advertising period will extend from the sixtieth to the third day before the election, that is, between August 26 and October 24, while the list of table members will be published by the Electoral Boards 22 days before the election (October 5).

In the event that none of the candidates for regional governor reaches the 50% plus 1 to be elected – something quite possible, when four, five, or even eight candidates compete – a second vote for governors with mandatory voting will be held on November 24.

This runoff will be held between the candidates who have obtained the two highest relative majorities, and the candidate who obtains the highest number of votes will be elected.

In the immediate future, the date on which the deadline for registering candidates for mayors, councilors, governors expires regional and regional councillors, is on Saturday, July 27.

The list can be reviewed at www.servel.cl.

Panorama municipal

Looking ahead to July 27, when candidates must be registered with the Electoral Service, the outlook in the various conglomerates is similar.

Chile Vamos, for example, is practically decided, after the results of the primaries last Sunday confirmed the places in Coihueco and Portezuelo. Only Chillán Viejo, Yungay, San Ignacio and Quillón are still pending. Of these communes, the last three would be RN.

So far, ten Chile Vamos candidates would be from RN, six from UDI and one from Evópoli.

In Chillán Viejo, the Yellows-Democrats pact would have a candidate for mayor, and they are evaluating other communes.

In the ruling party, meanwhile, there are still doubts in Bulnes and San Fabián, while in El Carmen there will be unconventional primaries on June 30 between the candidates of the PS, DC and CS. So far, there are 5 candidates from the PPD, 5 from the DC, 4 from the PS, and 2 from the PR.

Added to these lists of mayoral candidates are the Social Christian Party, which announced its candidacies for mayor in Coelemu, Quirihue, Chillán and El Carmen; the Republican Party, which will compete in San Carlos, Quillón and Pinto; and the more than thirty independents who are collecting signatures in each of the twenty-one communes.
