Biden announced yesterday that he will not run for re-election to the US presidency amid mounting pressure to withdraw after his June 27 telefight with Republican rival Donald Trump.
According to two sources with knowledge of the matter who asked Reuters not to be named, Biden reached the decision in the 48 hours before he announced he was dropping out of the presidential race after processing a large amount of data and polling that they showed that a victory was largely unattainable. He struggled to make a decision, but when he did, he moved quickly, a senior White House official said.
Biden also announced that he will remain in office until the end of his term in the US presidency, which ends at noon on January 20, 2025, and expressed his “full support” for Harris to receive the Democratic nomination for presidential election in November.

“I wholeheartedly support @joebiden and his decision to retire and wholeheartedly support @kamalaharris,” the actress underlined in an Instagram post, noting that the US vice president “is trusted and tested and a staunch supporter of women’s and people’s rights belonging to racial minorities and her message is a message of hope and unity for America in a time of great national division.”
Grammy award winner John Legend also called on Americans to “elect Kamala Harris as our president” in a statement accompanying his Instagram post.
“She’s ready for this fight and I’m excited to help her in any way I can,” noted Legend.
“Abbott Elementary” star Sheryl Lee Ralph, who attended a Democratic fundraiser for Biden just a few weeks ago with several other celebrities, posted a photo of herself with Harris, saying, “The President Biden endorsed Kamala Harris!”
Famed singer Katy Perry also reacted to Biden’s announcement by singing a verse from her recently released song “Woman’s World.”
“It’s a woman’s world, and you’re lucky to be living in it” she sang in a video she posted on Instagram.
“Hocus Pocus: The Three Witches” star Bette Midler, for her part, called Biden “a true American patriot” and noted in a post on X: “He has been a fantastic president and it hurts that the circumstances were so unique and historic that he had to give up He is the rarest of politicians, an honest man who lives by his values.”
He also called Republican nominee Trump “stupid” for his reaction to Biden’s announcement, in which the Republican nominee called him “the worst” president in American history.

“He restored honesty, dignity and integrity to the institution after four years of lies, crime, scandal and chaos.
“Thank you for your service, Mr. President. Now it is our duty as patriotic Americans to elect the Democrat (candidate) who will honor and carry forward what you have bequeathed to us.”
“Funny Girl,” 82-year-old star Barbra Streisand, also noted in a post on X: “Joe Biden will go down in history as a man who achieved significant accomplishments in his four-year term.
“We owe him gratitude for preserving our democracy,” he underlined.
Well-known former TV host Ellen DeGeneres also noted that she is “grateful to President Biden for everything he’s done,” while comedian Amy Schumer said she’s “playing it all” for Harris.
Pop star Ariana Grande also reposted Biden’s post endorsing Harris for the Democratic presidential nomination.
Finally, the well-known singer Cher wrote in her post on X that it is time for the Democrats to think “beyond the ordinary”.
