US authorities on Monday recommended their nationals to avoid traveling to neighboring Canada, due to the upsurge in Covid-19 cases. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has raised the level of travel warning for Canada to Level 4 – the highest.
“Avoid traveling to Canada,” read the warning. “If you have to travel to Canada, make sure you are fully immunized before you travel. “
According to the CDC, the number of new cases and the epidemiologic trend are the primary factors in determining warning levels. Level 4 corresponds to a rate of more than 500 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants during the last 28 days.
Canada had 1,427 new cases per 100,000 population in the last 14 days as of Sunday, according to Health Canada.
Since mid-December, Ottawa has reinstated a warning discouraging non-essential overseas travel, regardless of destination.
