The Centre for Health Protection of the Department of Health announced today (7th) the latest situation of the novel coronavirus disease case. According to the results of whole-genome sequencing analysis conducted by the Public Health Laboratory Service, it was confirmed that the 83 cases announced earlier contained the mutant virus strain Omicron that requires attention. Together with the above cases, Hong Kong has so far recorded 223 cases involving Omicron.
The case numbers involving Omicron are 12616, 12653, 12659 to 12666, 12669, 12671, 12672, 12678 to 12690, 12692 to 12707, 12709, 12711 to 12718, 12720, 12722 to 12725, 12727 to 12731, 12733 to 12744, 12746, 12747, 12754, 12755, 12767, 12785, 12805 and 12806.
In addition, as of 0:00 today, the center is investigating 17 newly confirmed and 16 asymptomatic infections in the past 24 hours (that is, a total of 33 positive cases in the 24 hours). So far, the total number of confirmed cases in Hong Kong is 12,749, up from 1. There were 116 asymptomatic infections since January 1. As for the cumulative number of positive test cases, there were 12,865 cases.
In response to the Omicron mutant virus strain being more infectious and at higher risk of infection, the center strongly urges the public to comply with the recently tightened social distancing measures in the next two weeks and avoid participating in crowded or unnecessary activities or gatherings, especially cross-family activities or Gatherings, religious activities or gatherings, etc., to reduce the chance of contracting the new coronavirus disease and prevent the spread of the virus in the community.
The new cases include 26 imported cases and 7 cases that are epidemiologically related to the imported cases. Twenty-eight cases involved infections with mutant virus strains, and the test results of the mutant virus strains in 3 cases are yet to be determined. The virus volume of the remaining 2 cases is not sufficient for the detection of the mutant virus strains. The case involved 9 men and 24 women, aged between 4 months and 73 years old.
In the past 14 days, a total of 281 positive cases of the novel coronavirus have been reported. 18 cases were epidemiologically related to imported cases or possibly related to imported cases, and the rest were imported cases.
