Member of the Indonesian Ombudsman, Yeka Hendra Fatika, highlighted the busy issue of restrictions and inspections of passengers’ luggage from abroad. He said that the public felt disadvantaged by regulations based on Minister of Trade Regulation (Permendag) Number 36 of 2023 concerning Import Policies and Regulations as last amended by Minister of Trade Number 3 of 2024. In this regulation, some personal luggage of passengers is limited in quantity.

“The Ombudsman views that the large number of public complaints is an indication that the public feels disadvantaged, especially as this regulation makes the passenger baggage entry service take a long time. “This creates the potential for maladministration,” said Yeka in a written statement, Tuesday (9/4).

He emphasized that President Joko Widodo’s direction was clear, namely that there would be no tolerance for slow and complicated public services. During the Eid holiday season, he asked that the policy not trigger accumulation of luggage.

The Ombudsman also encouraged the Ministry of Trade (Kemendag) to immediately provide service certainty regarding the backlog of luggage checks and ensure that this policy does not harm the public.

“Seeing the potential for maladministration, the Ombudsman will immediately carry out a legal audit of border crossing policies and an audit of the implementation of cross-border luggage inspection services together with the relevant officials at the Ministry of Trade and the Directorate General of Customs and Excise, Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Indonesia regarding this problem. ,” concluded Yeka.

On April 4 2024, the Head of the Indonesian Migrant Worker Protection Agency (BP2MI) Benny Rhamdani conducted an inspection of the JKS Temporary Storage Place (TPS) in Semarang, Central Java. During the inspection, the Head of BP2MI found many piles of goods sent by Indonesian Migrant Workers that had been stuck in that place for 2-3 months. (Z-11)
