Asuncion, IP Agency.- The Ombudsman’s Office has regained the “A” category from the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI), which positions Paraguay internationally in terms of fulfilling its commitments to Human Rights.
Ombudsman Raúl Ávila said that his administration, which began a year and eight months ago, focused on restoring the country’s international position.
As the body responsible for the application of Human Rights, the Ombudsman’s Office began evaluations and reviews of its internal processes and training of officials to improve its status before GANHRI, which is dependent on the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
Recovering the “A” category guarantees Paraguay’s international recognition within the network of human rights institutions and allows it to have a voice and vote in international human rights networks on the continent.
He pointed out, however, that there are still many areas to improve in the application of human rights, such as access to health care and quality education throughout the country.
The Ombudsman is also president of the Ibero-American Federation of Human Rights and as such, Paraguay will host the federation’s congress on October 29, 30 and 31.
