Olympique Lyonnais DNCG Verdict: Freedom to Reinforce Squad in Winter Transfer Window

2023-12-05 20:03:15

Tuesday November 28, Olympique Lyonnais played one of the most important matches of this 2023-24 season. It was not on the green rectangle that this meeting took place. Indeed, Les Gones, dead last in Ligue 1 following 13 days of the championship (a late match to be replayed once morest OM on December 6, editor’s note), were expected on the financial front. For several months now, the French club has been marked by the DNCG. On July 4, the financial policeman of French football delivered a first blow by regulating OL’s payroll and transfer compensation.

The new management of the club, which had to justify a hole of around 50 million euros, had taken this decision very badly. After hesitating to appeal, Lyon took action. But on July 18, the DNCG confirmed its decision on appeal. Angered, John Textor did not understand this decision. But he, like the whole club, had to deal with it. This had an impact on the transfer window with low-cost recruitment and maneuvers to circumvent the rules, as evidenced by the arrival of Ernest Nuamah, bought by Molenbeek (another club in the Eagle Football galaxy) and loaned to OL .

The DNCG delivered its verdict

All this did not help Lyon, as Laurent Blanc has often reminded us. Indeed, the club has not really strengthened and lost several starting players (Barcola, Gusto, Lukeba). The Lyon bench has also weakened following several departures of players at the end of their contract (Dembélé, Aouar, etc.). In tough sporting terms, OL was impatiently awaiting November 28. Present in the capital alongside the general director of OL Groupe, Textor, who renegotiated the club’s debt and found a potential buyer for OL Reign (which should bring in €53 million), was interviewed.

But the DNCG requested a reprieve in order to have other elements and examine the Lyon file more precisely. The response from the financial policeman of French football was therefore expected this Tuesday, December 5. And the DNCG and Olympique Lyonnais have found a compromise. If the payroll and transfer compensation will be supervised by the French football police, Olympique Lyonnais will nevertheless be able to get active this winter. “OL regains its budgetary flexibility through the DNCG management on a new budget revised upwards. Olympique Lyonnais takes note of the DNCG’s decision and thanks it for having heard its arguments which allow it to regain its budgetary flexibility.

“By validating the new budget revised upwards which was presented to it by Olympique Lyonnais and by simply asking it to respect it, the DNCG allows the club to present itself in a favorable situation before the winter transfer window so as to be able to consolidate your team by acquiring new players” announced Olympique Lyonnais in a press release. Positive news for Olympique Lyonnais which will have the latitude to move this winter on the transfer market, but which will have to carefully respect the budget which was presented and validated by the DNCG. One hell of a problem less for Olympique Lyonnais who really needed it.
