Olympic Yucatan – Yucatan Diary

The Paris Olympic Games open today and Mexico is attending with athletes in 27 disciplines. Yucatán will have four representatives: Adirem Tejeda Amaro, Dalia Alcocer Piña and Julia Gutiérrez Pereyra, in rhythmic gymnastics, and Regina Alférez Licea, in artistic swimming.

Since Mexico-68, Yucatecan athletes have participated in the Games. First, Miguel Medina Gutiérrez, in weightlifting, and in Munich 1972, Medina Gutiérrez himself and Jesús Conde Medina, also in weightlifting.

After a break of two editions (Montreal-76 and Moscow-80), Yucatan is once again present at an Olympics with the sailor Nilo Dzib Poot in Los Angeles 1984. Nilo competes in Seoul-88, and in Atlanta-96. Pedro Pablo Silveira Cervera took over the baton in sailing. David Mier y Terán Cuevas competed in windsurfing in Sydney 2000.

In Athens 2004, David Mier y Terán represented Mexico for the second time, and the debutants were diver Rómmel Pacheco Marrufo, soccer player Guadalupe Worbis Aguilar, archer Eduardo Magaña Poot and Paralympic athlete Freddy Sandoval Chi. In Beijing 2008, Rómmel, David and Freddy Sandoval also competed.

Lino Montes competed in weightlifting in London 2012. Karen Achach Ramírez, in synchronized, and Rómmel went to Rio de Janeiro in 2016.

Due to the Covid pandemic, the 2020 event was postponed to 2021 in Tokyo and Henry Martín Mex became the first Yucatecan to win a medal, a bronze, in soccer. In trampoline, Rómmel competed for the fourth time.

It has been 56 years since the first time. These days, young people and adults are paying attention to the Mexicans and the Yucatecans. We trust that they will put effort and heart into it.
