Olympic triathlon postponed due to pollution in the Seine River

The men’s triathlon at the Olympic Games Paris 2024originally scheduled for Tuesday 30 July, has been postponed due to poor water quality in the Seine River, competition officials announced.

The race has been postponed to this Wednesday. «Tests carried out today on the Seine revealed water quality levels that did not offer sufficient guarantees to allow the event to take place»reads the statement from the International Triathlon Union.

«Unfortunately, weather events beyond our control, such as the rain that fell in Paris on 26 and 27 July, may alter the water quality and force us to reschedule the event for health reasons. Despite the improvement in water quality levels in recent hours, readings at some points along the swimming course are still above acceptable limits.»he adds.

According to France24, the concern is due to infection-causing bacteria such as Escherichia coli. If the levels of bacteria remain too high on Wednesday morning, both the men’s and women’s races are likely to be postponed to Friday.

For the mixed triathlon relay on August 5, the emergency day is August 6. Organizers have promised to make the Seine swimmable for the Olympics and have spent 1.4 billion euros ($1.51 billion) cleaning up its riverbed.

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo took a dip in the river earlier this month in an attempt to convince skeptics that it is not polluted.
