While the collapse of the government coalition in power across the Rhine could lead to early legislative elections, the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) remains focused on its objectives, which are mainly the promotion of a major law in favor of sport high-level and the preparation of a bid for the 2040 Summer Games.
L’Germany has entered a period of turbulence.
Made up until then of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) of Chancellor Olaf Scholz, the Liberal Democratic Party (FDP) and the Greens, the government coalition was in fact shattered this week following the dismissal of the Minister of Finance, Christian Lindner, who happens to be the figurehead of the FDP.
This situation is reshuffling the political cards and the balance, with the more than likely prospect of an early legislative election. However, if such a vote were to be called, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) could return to power with its allies according to current polls placing the party of former Chancellor Angela Merkel at 33% favorable opinions.
Aware of this possibility, the DOSB intends to make its voice heard to defend the place of sport in German public policies, while the country is moving towards a candidacy for the organization of the Olympic and Paralympic Games. summer of 2040.
In a statement published on November 8, 2024 on its official websitethe DOSB thus considers that:
For sport, the end of the coalition at the federal level means that the sports policy project of the current legislature, namely the creation of a law on the promotion of sport, cannot be concluded, because it will not be presented before Parliament.
Our objective will now be to seek the conditions to allow the upcoming adoption of such a law with a new federal government.
This also includes the creation of an independent Sports Agency for high performance and management of high performance sport to achieve the desired paradigm shift and thus ensure success for our athletes and our country in sports competitions in the medium and long term..
Beyond this observation and the determination to support the work of the future coalition, the DOSB hopes that institutional turbulence does not weaken the preparation of German athletes for the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Games, particularly at the yardstick of the financial commitment for sport while the 2025 budget must in theory be approved in the days to come.
The German Olympic body also hopes to be able to count on the support of the country’s main political parties to continue its reflection with a view to bidding for the 2040 Summer Games.
On this point, and as stated in the DOSB press release:
Our grand plan to bring the Olympic and Paralympic Games to Germany has party support, and we are therefore confident that we can gain support from the new federal government.
This summer, the option of a new summer candidacy across the Rhine – after the failures of Berlin 2000, Leipzig 2012 and more recently Hamburg 2024 – took shape with the commitment of the government led by Olaf Scholz.
Since the German House developed as part of the Paris 2024 Games, the German Federal Minister of the Interior, Nancy Faeser, signed a joint declaration with the DOSB to support and encourage the emergence of a candidacy for the 2040 edition.
Marking the desire of the federal authorities to avoid the slightest controversy by ruling out a project for 2036 – which would have echoed the centenary of the 1936 Berlin Games – for the benefit of a candidacy aimed at establishing the conditions for celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of German Reunification, this orientation was reinforced shortly after by the Chancellor’s trip to France.
Olaf Scholz had also taken advantage of his visit to Paris to produce French editions a model of inspiration for a future project likely to take shape across several cities in the country, including the federal capital, Berlin.
Government support also resulted in the granting of an envelope of 6.95 million euros between 2024 and 2027 to carry out feasibility studies and implement a global strategy in order to identify potential sites intended to host the planetary event.

L’Germany is currently experiencing significant political upheaval. The coalition government, which originally consisted of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) led by Chancellor Olaf Scholz, along with the Liberal Democratic Party (FDP) and the Greens, has collapsed. This destabilization was triggered by the dismissal of Finance Minister Christian Lindner, a prominent member of the FDP.
This disruption in governance may lead to early legislative elections, potentially allowing the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) to regain power, as indicated by recent polls showing the former Chancellor Angela Merkel’s party receiving about 33% of favorable opinions.
In light of these developments, the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) is emphasizing the importance of maintaining support for sports within public policy, particularly as Germany contemplates a bid to host the 2040 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games.
On November 8, 2024, the DOSB released a statement expressing concern that the dissolution of the coalition government could derail essential sports policy initiatives, notably the proposed legislation aimed at promoting sports, which may no longer be submitted to Parliament. The DOSB aims to create conditions for the new government to pass this law and establish an independent sports agency to manage high-performance athletics effectively, ensuring success in international competitions.
The DOSB also hopes that the political turbulence does not adversely affect preparations for the upcoming Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Games, especially given the approaching budget approval for 2025. Additionally, the organization is looking to secure support from major political parties for its vision of hosting the 2040 Summer Games, emphasizing the broad party backing for this grand plan.
This summer, momentum for a new summer Olympic bid gained traction following previous unsuccessful attempts by Berlin (2000), Leipzig (2012), and Hamburg (2024). Under Chancellor Scholz’s leadership, the government expressed renewed commitment to this cause.
During the Paris 2024 Games, German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser, alongside the DOSB, signed a joint declaration to bolster the effort for a 2040 candidacy. Notably, the federal government has avoided contentious associations with a 2036 project—which would mark the 100th anniversary of the controversial 1936 Berlin Olympics—and instead focuses on celebrating the 50th anniversary of German reunification.
Chancellor Scholz has also used his visit to Paris to promote the idea of a multi-city hosting model for future Olympic events, which includes Berlin among other cities. The government has allocated €6.95 million from 2024 to 2027 to conduct feasibility studies and develop a comprehensive strategy for the potential Olympic venues.
As Germany navigates this period of change, the DOSB remains hopeful that new political developments will ultimately benefit the nation’s athletic aspirations and aid in successfully hosting future Olympic Games.
