The Olympic Flame that reached the Acropolis traveled through the streets of Athens yesterday.
Olympian Pericles Iakovakis was the one who lit the flame on the Acropolis altar, having received the baton from swimming champion Andreas Vazaios.
“During a respite from the evening rain late last night, Greek 400m hurdles champion Pericles Iakovakis lit an altar in front of the 2,500-year-old Parthenon temple, on the acropolis that dominates the Athens skyline and is the Greece’s top tourist attraction,” notes the Associated Press, which publishes stunning photos of the flame on the Sacred Rock.
The flame will be handed over to French officials next Friday at the Panathenaic Stadium, where the first modern Olympic Games were held in 1896. Then, in the port of Piraeus, it will board the Belem, a French sailing ship built in 1896, to be transported to France.
The flame is expected to arrive in the southern French port of Marseille on May 8 and will travel to France in preparation for the opening ceremony on July 26 in Paris.
