THE BADMINTON WORLD FEDERATION (BWF) officially announced the draw for the 2024 Paris Olympics on Friday (12/7). The draw was conducted for four events, while one event, the men’s doubles, was postponed. The women’s doubles and mixed doubles will face tougher tests.

In the men’s singles, Jonatan Christie is in Group L. He will face India’s Lakshya Sen, Guatemala’s Kevin Cordon, and Belgium’s Julien Carraggi. Anthony Sinisuka Ginting is in Group H with host Toma Junior Popov and the US’ Howard Shu.

In the women’s singles, Gregoria Mariska Tunjung is in Group G. She will meet Ukrainian representative Polina Buhrova and Czech badminton player Tereza Svabikova.

In the mixed doubles, Rinov Rivaldy/Pitha Haningtyas Mentari are in Group A. The group will be a test because it is also occupied by the top seeds Zheng Si Wei/Huang Ya Qiong (China), then there are South Korean representatives Kim Won Ho/Jeong Na Eun, and the host pair Thom Gicquel/Delphine Delrue.

“There is no easy group but I think everyone has the same chance to get through the group,” said Indonesian mixed doubles coach, Herry Iman Pierngadi.

In the women’s doubles sector, Apriyani Rahayu/Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti are in Group A. In the same group are the top seeds from China Chen Qing Chen/Jia Yi Fan, then there are Japanese pair Mayu Matsumoto/Wakana Nagahara and Malaysian pair Pearly Tan/Thinaah Muralitharan.

Indonesian women’s doubles coach Eng Hian said Apriyani/Fadia were more technically, physically and mentally prepared with the group. He hopes Apriyani/Fadia focus on preparing themselves match by match.

“We all know that the record of meetings with the Chinese and Malaysian pairs in the last meeting was not good, with the Japanese pair, although they won the last meeting, the match was quite tough,” said Eng Hian.

For doubles, the top two in the group will advance to the next round. For singles, only the group winner will advance.

On the other hand, the men’s doubles draw was postponed. This was due to the results of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) hearing regarding the host’s request to allow two representatives to compete in the men’s doubles. In the men’s doubles sector, Indonesia has Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Rian Ardianto.

“For the men’s doubles, we are still waiting for the final decision from BWF and IOC regarding the addition of participants for the French doubles. Hopefully it will not drag on and the draw can be done soon,” said Head of Binpres PP PBSI Ricky Soebagdja. (Z-6)
