“I didn’t want it to be something boring like a poster with just a logo and a date like it usually is. I wanted to tell a story. I wanted it to be a lot of fun because it was going to be a huge party. I wanted it to be joyful,” said Roncin in an interview with the AP agency before the unveiling.
With a touch of surrealism and many elaborate details, the poster depicts Parisian historical monuments and sports venues and offers a joint view of the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Its central motif is the Eiffel Tower, on which the national stadium Stade de France is strung. The Arc de Triomphe is depicted with a tennis court on top, and the Seine and the Alexander III Bridge are not missing. In the background is Marseille, where the yachting competitions will be held, and a wave reminiscent of Tahiti, which will host the surfing competitions.
Eight mascots of the Olympic Games are also hidden on the poster. “I locked myself in my workshop for four months and it was like that day and night,” Gattoni said. He spent more than 2000 hours creating the poster and all the details. “It’s a poster that should work even in 100 years,” believes the artist.
